A United Airlines flight carrying passengers struck a light pole on the New Jersey Turnpike during its final approach to Newark Liberty International Airport on Sunday, sending debris crashing onto vehicles below in a terrifying incident captured on dashcam video.
Dashcam Footage Shows Near-Disaster
The dramatic video, obtained from a Schmidt Bakery delivery truck driver and shared by H&S Bakery’s transportation executive Chuck Paterakis, shows United flight UA169 flying dangerously low over the turnpike around 2 p.m. The aircraft’s landing gear collided with a pole, showering debris onto the truck’s windshield as the driver watched the nightmare unfold directly overhead. Port Authority officials confirmed a tractor-trailer sustained damage from the collision, with the driver suffering non-life-threatening injuries requiring hospital transport.
Governor Responds to Incident
New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill released a statement following the shocking event, expressing relief that the aircraft landed safely with all passengers and crew unharmed. Federal Aviation Administration investigators immediately launched a probe into how a commercial jetliner came close enough to ground infrastructure to make physical contact during approach. A preliminary investigation revealed the plane’s landing tire and underside struck both the pole and the tractor-trailer before the damaged pole hit a passing Jeep on the turnpike.
Safety Questions Mount
United Airlines confirmed the incident, stating the aircraft made contact with ground infrastructure during final approach. The FAA’s involvement signals serious concerns about flight path safety protocols near one of America’s busiest airports. Multiple vehicles on the nation’s most-traveled highway were caught in the debris field, raising questions about approach altitude standards and pilot decision-making during landing procedures. The incident highlights the dangerous proximity between commercial flight paths and civilian traffic infrastructure in densely populated areas.
